WELCOME TO THE SILENT APOCALYPSE Bright lights shine in the night sky. The wind blows past the thin walls of your log cabin. A wolf howls in the distance. You stared at the meager supplies in your bag and wished for the days before your strength mysteriously ran out. How long will you survive? THIS LONG SHEEP The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that forces lone players to think for themselves as they explore a frozen wilderness in the wake of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies – just you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster. Wintermute The episodic story mode for The Long Dark begins with two of the five episodes that make up WINTERMUTE, Season One.
- In Chapter One: “Don't Be Kind”, bush pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood's plane broke up after crashing deep in the Northern Canadian wilderness following a mysterious flash of light in the sky. Struggling to survive while desperately searching for Astrid, Mackenzie comes across the town of Milton, where she begins to understand the scope of this silent apocalypse.
- In Episode Two: “Luminance Fugue,” Mackenzie's search for Astrid takes her deeper into the wild Winter wilderness. A mysterious trap may be the key to finding Astrid, but can it be trusted?
- WINTERMUTE's first two episodes represent approximately 15 hours of gameplay. Chapters Three through Five are included in the game price and will be unlocked for free at launch.
- Featuring performances by Jennifer Hale, Mark Meer, David Hayter, and Elias Toufexis (Episode Three) and music by Cris Velasco
- No hand holding! The game forces players to think for themselves by providing information but never giving the answers. You have to earn the right to survive.
- Permadeath! When you die in Survival Mode, your save is deleted. Every decision is important. [Note that WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath.]
- Condition and Calories: Monitor your Hunger, Thirst, Fatigue and Cold as you try to balance the energy required to obtain resources. Every action costs Calories, and time is your most valuable resource. Choose your path carefully.
- Explore the World for Supplies: More than 100 pieces of equipment including Vehicles, Light Sources, Weapons, First Aid supplies, Clothing and more.
- The Vast World of Life: Explore 50 square kilometers of the Northern Canadian wilderness in search of valuable materials. In winter. The dynamic depends on the day, weather, presence of wildlife, etc. It provides just enough randomness to make things difficult.
- Survival at Your Fittest: Find and maintain your life-saving equipment by hunting, fishing, trapping, climbing, mapping, searching for life-saving food and gear, and trying to avoid dying from hostile wildlife, falling into hypothermia, frostbite, or dysentery (among other unpleasant ailments).
- Hunt or Be Hunted: Wildlife and wildlife to hunt: Wolves, Bears, Rabbits, Deers, Crows and more will be available in future updates.
- Choose Your Experience: Four Different Experience Modes let you find a difficulty level you're comfortable with, from Pilgrim Mode, which is supposed to be quiet and contemplative, to Interloper Mode, where only the most experienced survivors have the chance to last a week.
