In the not-too-distant future, a superior intelligence will prevail over all other artificial intelligence. Society is moving to a constantly integrated reality connected to a single neural network and constantly optimizing the user experience by processing personal data. Nathan, an outsider, makes a living off the grid as a smuggler of modified hardware and cracked software. Equipped with a special headset, he is among the few who can turn off the AVR and see reality for what it is. Nathan shares an apartment with his girlfriend Jay, a talented AVR graffiti artist whose drones techno-color all over the city's sprawling area. One morning, Nathan wakes up to an empty apartment and finds a cryptic message on the bathroom mirror. Having accidentally broken his headset, Nathan is disconnected, but is determined to figure out what happened to Jay. He embarks on an incredible journey involving hacker groups and AVR technicians' guilds. Travelling the world, Nathan encounters hardware graveyards, digital archaeology, cryptosan tribes, and virtual reality misery.
